Illustrated endpapers. Pages are clean no writing underlining or highlighting but yellowing with age. It appears that someone has reglued binding some stains to endpapers and covers where glue has aged. Hinges are a bit loose and glue is showing but secure. A few lower pages are beginning to seperate a bit from text block but still attached. A few pages are finger soiled and REP has some creasing to lower corner.

Covers are age-toned with a few bumps to edges light creasing to upper front corner rubbing to corners.

  • These celebrated plates were first used to illustrate the Comte de Tessin s Faunillane, ou l Infante Jaune, published in Tessin, the Swedish Ambassador at the Court of France, originally wrote the fairy tale in order to shine in the salon of French socialite Madame de Tencin , and was on his way of having it handsomely published by Prault when he was suddenly recalled to Sweden.

Only two copies were ever printed but Tessin took them back with him and made a gift of the plates to the publisher Prault, supposedly because he did not want to seem frivolous back home given the bizarre subject matter of the illustrations.
